Steampunk Zombies. What could be better?
A few weeks ago I became extremely interested in steampunk. For those of you who don't know what that is, "Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction, alternate history, and speculative fiction that came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s.[1] Specifically, steampunk involves an era or world where steam power is still widely used—usually the 19th century and often Victorian eraBritain—that incorporates prominent elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology or futuristic innovations as Victorians may have envisioned them; in other words, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture,architectural style, art, etc. This technology may include such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne or real technologies like the computer but developed earlier in an alternate history." to quote this article from Wikipedia, the all knowing website. But back to the book! Boneshaker, sci-fi novel by Cherie Priest, is a thrilling, stay-up-until-2:00-AM book. It is set in Seattle (I can't remember what year), which has been contaminated by Blight gas. But I'm getting WAY ahead of myself. This post probably isn't even making any sense.... Oh, well. You'll just have to keep up, I suppose! Some inventor guy, Leviticus Blue (I think that's his name) makes this big drill machine (called Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-shaking Drill Machine, or 'The Boneshaker' for short) for a Russian contest for a drill powerful to cut through the ice in Alaska or something to get the gold buried there. I think that's how it happened. I got the book from the library, so, to my sadness, I don't own a copy. This is why the details in this post are so hazy. And he decides to test it randomly and releases all this Blight gas and if you breathe in this gas you turn into a zombie (referred to in the novel as 'rotters'). And then all this stuff happens. It's hard to explain without ruining the entire story, so you should just go read the book! It's a five star novel. And it's about steampunk zombies. What could be better?
